The Story Behind the Scent

Jessica never expected a bookkeeping client to become a trusted friend and creative partner.

In February 2026, Jake walked into Jessica’s office looking like he had just stepped out of the Pacific Northwest wilderness: rugged boots, sawdust on his hoodie, the smell of chainsaw exhaust, and fresh-cut cedar following behind him. He was building his tree service company from the ground up, fueled by long days, ambition, and grit.

Jessica had spent years helping businesses organize the chaos behind the scenes. Numbers were her comfort zone; systems were her strength. Jake’s world was different—outdoorsy, hands-on, and constantly moving. From the beginning, their conversations were easy, practical, and full of ideas. A genuine friendship formed through trust, honesty, and a shared respect for hard work.

What started as bookkeeping meetings soon became building spreadsheets, pricing jobs, discussing business decisions, and helping Jake shape his company into something real. Jessica brought structure and vision. Jake brought energy, grit, and the scent of the woods after every long day on the job.

One thing Jessica couldn’t stop noticing was the way Jake carried the forest with him everywhere he went: cedar bark, damp earth, and fresh-cut wood. It was a clean, grounding, nostalgic scent that made any space feel calm.

One afternoon, Jake stopped by to drop off paperwork, and the office filled with that familiar forest aroma. Jessica laughed and said, “You know people would pay money for that smell.”

That single sentence sparked an idea: what if they could bottle the feeling of the Pacific Northwest? Not fake chemical fragrances, but something real, comforting, wild, and familiar.

As friends do when an idea feels too good to ignore, they started talking it through with curiosity, excitement, and a shared belief that it was worth building.

That idea became Common Heartwood—a scent company inspired by long days in the trees, rainy backroads, cedar forests, and the unlikely friendship between two people who found common ground through work, trust, and creativity.

Together, they built more than a business. They built a brand rooted in friendship, hard work, and the calming feeling of mountain scents.
